CHRISTMAS - NAVIDAD
The Spanish friars brought Christianity to América in the 16th century. Christmas,
being a festivity of great importance in the Christian European world,
became an event to be celebrated in América. It was rooted in the
Spanish Conquest and absorbed the elements and attributes which were of
significance to the indigenous cultures. The Christmas festivities in México are today an integrated expression
of regional folk customs established by the indigenous cultural diversity
influencing the Christian faith doctrine. Consequently, the celebration of "El Nacimiento del Niño-Dios" has been subjected
to peoples' interpretations according to their local environments and natural
resources. "La Romería Navideña" is a popular fiesta which is celebrated
with food, beverages (ponches), song, dance, floral offerings and piñatas
stuffed with fruit and candies (confites y colaciones), in the open fields
surrounding a Hermitage or Sanctuary. Such observance takes place the evening before its religious festivity
by a great number of "peregrinos" traditionally congregating at the place.
The Aztlán Academy's Suite "NUESTRA NAVIDAD" enacts this cultural
manifestation.
